Apart from the Ultima Underworld series, I never played the original's Ultima 1 - 7. I did, however, get Ultima 8. The game was amazing, I really like games that give you freedom, and U8 let you do anything you wanted. The town that you started near was very dark and evil, and the music from that part was very memorable. The tune was so perfect for the role it played, that I had to make something special out of it. I chose the name Pagan for the obvious reason that it was the game, and I think it makes sense that I chose 'Dark Town Mix' since it was, very much so, a dark town with a dark meaning.
I must say that this mix was nothing short of a very challenging challenge. I spent a whole lotta time getting excited over one thing I added, then having to have to remove it to keep with the theme. I went through several beats such as tribal & drum 'n' bass. When I finished it tho, I came out with what sounded like a drum set to a soft rock song. However, the hints of jazz, ambience and tribal rhythm made it hard to place a style label on. The conversion from the MIDI to the mix was almost the same, the strings were kept as were the percussion set in the intro. But I did change the lead from a trumpet to a smooth synthetic piano sounding sample. The bassline turned out to sound very cool jazzy, especially when backed up by the hihat sequences. It was very much a mix in styles for this tune. Finally, I kept the track short because the original MIDI had only a couple of themes that were fine just the way they were. I thought it would be wrong to add any new leads or chords, as it would not properly represent the moods I was trying to convey straight from the game.
