Uboat is a game for the 3Com PalmPilot and IBM WorkPad. This a shareware product with a registration fee of $9 US.

Requirements: Any Pilot, PalmPilot, or WorkPad running PalmOS version 2.0 or later. Support for Version 1.0x of PalmOS is being considered, but for now it's 2.0 and later only.

HOW TO PLAY

Placing your ships on your board:

At the beginning of each game you have a screen where you can place 5 ships on your playing board. You have a Carrier, a Destroyer, a Frigate, a Submarine, and a UBoat. Each ship location is designated with the first letter of the ship type. You can tap the auto button to randomly place your ships on the board, and you can drag any ship to a new location. You can rotate a ship by tapping it without dragging. (There must be enough room for the ship to move to the new location when you rotate it... Experiment, it's easy!) Ships cannot overlap, and must be completely on the board. When you have your ships place, tap the OK button.

Sinking the opponent:

The board with your ships is at the lower right corner of the screen. Your opponent's board is the larger one at the upper left of the screen. You fire a shot at your opponent by tapping on the larger board. If you don't hit a ship, a wave will appear in that spot. Otherwise, a hit will be shown, but you will not know what type of ship you hit. Each time you take a shot, your opponent (the computer) will take a shot at your board. When either of you sinks a ship, there will be a beep, and an icon of the type of ship sunk will show up next to the board it is on. The number of moves is also shown, and when all 5 ships on a board are sunk, the game is over. To start a new game, do a Command-N (or use the Menu.)

Preferences:

At any time you can do a Command-P (or use the Menu button) to display the Preferences screen. You can turn sound on/off and choose who goes first. Statistics are show for the games played, and can be reset if you have registered your copy.

Known Bugs/Problems:

-There may be some update problems with other programs that do not save bits behind their dialogs, but I haven't found any.

-No support for PalmOS version 1.

-Sometimes the computer makes stupid moves. Not often, but sometimes!

-No 2 player human support. (I'm considering it for a 2.0 release.)

-Probably a couple things I have forgotten or haven't noticed. Reports are appreciated! Email [email protected]
