TO INSTALL
1. Place the autoexec.cfg file in your TFC folder inside your halflife folder. This is normally C:\SIERRA\Half-Life\tfc
2. Start or Join a Team Fortress Classic game. When in game, bring down the console and type this in
"exec autoexec.cfg" without the quote marks.
NOTE: When changes are made to the config file with a text editor, step 2 should be carried out again.
WHAT THIS FILE DOES
This file uses console commands of the Quake2 engine to change certain ingame properties.
This should then increase performance (run faster/less jerky) of TFC especially in multiplayer/internet
games. REMEMBER anything that you don't like you can change by opening up the autoexec.cfg file
with a text editor such as Wordpad, and alter the relevant field.
Below is a list of exactly what this file does:
1. Caps the frame rate of multiplayer modem, multiplayer L.A.N. and singleplayer games at 30fps.
2. Turns off spraypaint images and explosion marks (sorry, i know the're pretty but they bugger up ping
times).
3. Turns CD music off.
4. Sets game to use lores sounds (not much different and improves ping even further).
5. Sets ingame downloads on.
6. Turns delta compression on and your server prediction on.
7. Turns other player prediction on. (the server guesses where people are until updated, smoothens play a
bit).
8. Sets game to use lores models (You can't really tell).
9. Sets data rate to 3000 and pushlatency to -250 as default (remember these can be changed by pressing
"r" for rate and "p" for pushlatency, see below.
10. Dynamic lighting is off (the flashlight and the other glares and flashes on walls are disabled).
11. Player shadows are off (not noticable).
12. All reverb is off (echo'y kind of sound processing).
13. Console speed is made tonnes faster (console coming down and going up is loads faster).
14. A3D/EAX sound is turned off.
15. Joystick disabled (change this value to, joystick "1", if you want to use a joystick).
16. Turns on the Z/trick (Speeds up some graphic cards).
17. Turn texture sorting off (speeds up game performance with a little image quality loss).
18. Sound mixahead set to 0.2 (should sort out some of those "st st stuttering" sound problems).
19. Sets the "t" key to chat in multiplayer games (like Quake2).
20. Set the "q" key to chat to your team only, for tactical play ;-)
21. The crossbow has been made less sensitive in zoom mode making it easier to control in a panic.
22. Turns tracer effects off some weapons.
23. The heads-up-display has been set to display players chat for longer (no more missing that shared
email address or abusive remark again).
24. The heads-up-display has been set to display death notices for longer (no more missing who killed
who and with what again).
ASSIGNED KEYS AND WHAT THEY DO
press "n"
to view the netgraph, to view net performance. (adjust the pushlatency and rate settings to reduce the
amount of yellow and red bars on the graph, Yellow = Bad, Red = Very Bad).
press "p"
to change your pushletency settings (press once to set to -100, and again to set to -150, etc etc it cycles
between -100 to -500 in 50 increments) this setting should be about the same as your ping rate, so if u have a
ping of 200 your pushletency rate should be -200. The setting will then be displayed in the console.
press "r"
to change your rate setting (this is different from the pushletency command and should be set thus:-
28.8/33.6 modem users should have this set to around 2000 / 56K modem users around 3000 and ISDN users
around 5000 / LAN users around 9999. watch the net graph and adjust acordingly so there are as few red
and yellow bars as possible, yellow is bad, red is worse. (press once to set to 2000, and again to set to 2500,
etc etc it cycles between 2000 to 5000 in 500 increments). The setting will then be displayed in the console.
Press "t"
to talk as in quake2.
Press "q"
to talk to your team only (useful in team games for tactical play).
For those who havn't already done so, use the Sierra utilities program which came with Half-Life to upgrade, this sorts out tonnes of problems. For those not on the net look out for updates on regular PC magazine cover CD's.
