A Runner Up in Human Head Studios' mapping contest. A good, old-fashioned tavern map for good, old-fashioned Viking mayhem!
A good, old-fashioned tavern map for good, old-fashioned Viking mayhem! Actually, the map draws its inspiration from the movie 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' -- I wanted to recreate the great bar fighting scene from the movie, where the young sword mistress takes on like 20 guys & beats them all senseless. More to the point, I wanted to take the idea of a mostly-wooden (i.e., smash-able) tavern and transplant it into Rune, so that players could break & mess with tons of stuff. At the same time, I wanted to include some items that not only broke, but changed the landscape and affected the flow of the map as they did so. A few of the breakable items in the map vanish in a cloud of debris, but most stick around, changing the basic layout of the map as a result.
The title? Well, I wasn't able to fully recreate the look, feel & dynamic atmosphere of the scene from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, so I decided to name the tavern in this map 'The Crouching Wendol' as sort of a tribute to the map's inspiration.
The map plays well with 3-6 people - and is surprisingly fun with only 2 -- and has 8 PlayerStarts in place. More than 6-8, though, and things will probably get crowded. Ideally, games on this map would be short (10 frags or something) so that the breakable stuff can reset with the start of a new game.
